Burgstall Frauenstein
Burgstall Frauenstein marks the site of a former medieval hilltop castle above the Alpsee in Hohenschwangau. The name describes a place where a castle once stood.
Written records first identify Frauenstein as castrum Frawenstein, and the site belonged to the lords of Schwangau. It formed the westernmost of their neighbouring castles.
Archaeological traces show a deep neck ditch, a broad rampart-like formation, and foundation remains on the hilltop. No clear outer bailey remains on the spur.
The small tower castle likely served as an additional stronghold during territorial conflicts involving Schwangau, Tyrol, Augsburg, and Bavaria. Later records describe the site as completely decayed.
The castle lost its strategic role, was dismantled, and now survives through foundations and the ditch. A nineteenth-century monument still commemorates the former castle site.
The Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection lists Burgstall Frauenstein as a medieval archaeological monument. A walking trail leads to it from Hohenschwangau.
Forest now limits the former viewpoint towards the royal castles and the Alpsee. The remaining features connect this quiet site with medieval Allgäu.
