Alte Brücke
Alte Brücke spans the Neckar in Heidelberg, linking the old town with Neuenheim across a gently arched sandstone roadway. Built between 1786 and 1788, the bridge measures about 200 metres long and seven metres wide. Its pale stone and medieval gate create a familiar view toward Heidelberg’s historic centre.
The bridge gate preserves two 28-metre towers from the late Gothic city walls, later given Baroque domed roofs. Eight wooden bridges stood here before this sandstone structure, repeatedly destroyed by war, floods, or ice. Sculptures of Elector Karl Theodor, Minerva, and Saint John of Nepomuk mark the bridge and its history.
German soldiers destroyed the crossing during the Second World War, but local fundraising supported its reconstruction soon afterward. Renovations between 2005 and 2017 repaired the piers, arches, and gate. Look closely at the southwestern pier, where high-water marks record floods from different years.
