St. Johannes Kapelle
St. Johannes Kapelle stands in Hanover-Davenstedt as an Evangelical Lutheran chapel and Davenstedt’s oldest building. Built in 1790, it presents symmetrical half-timbering on a rubble-stone base beneath a gabled roof. A bell-shaped hood crowns the northern roof side, while the heavily profiled entrance door contrasts with the otherwise restrained exterior.
Inside, a Baroque-style altar carries an eagle symbolising the Evangelist John. Vine and floral paintings cover the ceiling, incorporating symbols of the Evangelists, while leaded-glass windows show scenes from the Passion of Christ. Religious services share the space with cultural events such as readings, linking worship with community life.
A bell made by Johan Meier in Celle in 1635 preserves a striking connection with the chapel’s history. The original bell was melted down during the Thirty Years’ War to make cannons.
