Wasserschlössle
The Wasserschlössle stands in Freiburg’s Sternwald, above the Wiehre district, as a sandstone architectural landmark. Although it resembles a small castle, the building serves as a water reservoir.
Built in 1895 and 1896, it combines turrets, portals, and carefully crafted sandstone details. Its appearance draws on Freiburg’s city seal, with its symbolic open city gate.
Water from the deep wells of the higher Ebnet waterworks flows downhill into the building. Two main chambers store the water inside the reservoir.
The chambers measure 45 metres long, 33 metres deep, and 6 metres high. Together, they hold 3.8 million litres of water for Freiburg.
In 2001, the Bromberg high reservoir joined the system roughly 600 metres away in Sternwald. This addition increased the system’s capacity by 6 million litres.
The Wasserschlössle gives essential water infrastructure the form of a castle-like structure. Its sandstone surfaces, turrets, and portals create a distinctive landmark among the surrounding trees.
