Alban Stolz
Near Freiburg Minster in Freiburg im Breisgau, the bronze bust of Alban Stolz presents a serious, larger-than-life figure. Emil Stadelhofer created the work in 1913.
A high forehead, voluminous hair and double-breasted coat portray the Catholic theologian as a popular writer rather than a cleric. The sculpture rises from a pedestal decorated with classical motifs. Stolz wrote religious calendars and other works for a broad audience, but antisemitic passages have made his public legacy deeply contested. Freiburg and the archdiocese have considered relocating the monument, while cultural-heritage protection complicates that debate. The bronze face remains close to the cathedral, combining a carefully observed portrait with an unresolved question about public remembrance.
