Paulsplatz

Paulsplatz is a historic square in the heart of Frankfurt, Germany, and the largest square in its old town. St Paul’s Church dominates this pedestrian square in Frankfurt. St Paul’s Church was built between 1789 and 1833 and hosted the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848. The square connects directly with Frankfurt’s historic Römerberg. Berliner Strasse borders the north, while Neue Kräme marks the eastern side. Plane trees line the eastern section of Paulsplatz. The Unity Monument, erected in 1903, features a three-sided obelisk topped by an allegorical bronze figure. The pedestrian square is wheelchair accessible for visitors. The site also recalls Frankfurt’s first recorded Franciscan monastery, documented there from 1270. War damage changed the square, including the loss of the Old Stock Exchange. Bethmannstrasse and Braubachstrasse meet the square to the south, while the Old Town Hall stands northwest. The square hosts summer street festivals and Frankfurt’s Christmas Market each year. Cafés place outdoor tables among the trees during the summer months.
