Leo Gingold
Leo Gingold is a Stolperstein at Breite Gasse 23 in Frankfurt am Main, set into the pavement as a memorial. The small brass plaque commemorates a Holocaust victim and forms part of the Stolpersteine project for people persecuted by Nazi terror. The location is wheelchair accessible, while the address marks a place that no longer exists. Gunter Demnig initiated the project to remember people at their last freely chosen homes.
Born in Frankfurt in 1914, Leo Gingold, also known as Löb, trained in commercial work at a textile wholesaler. In 1933, his family fled to France as persecution intensified under the Nazi regime. There, he and his siblings joined the French Résistance against the occupation. French police arrested him during a search on 4 November 1942, followed by internment in several camps. Deportation to Auschwitz began on 9 March 1943, where he was murdered. The plaque keeps his name, birth year, and fate beside Breite Gasse, connecting one address with a life destroyed by persecution.
