Josef Nussbaum
The Josef Nussbaum Stolperstein in Frankfurt marks the life of a Jewish businessman and the persecution he endured under Nazi rule. A small brass-plated stone is set into Frankfurt’s pavement.
Josef Nussbaum was born in Mittelsinn and later lived in Frankfurt with his wife Karoline and their children. The memorial links his family story to Frankfurt, where he lived and worked. He co-founded J & S Nussbaum OHG with his brother Siegmund, creating a shoe wholesale business at Zeil 43. Nazi boycotts damaged the shoe business and reduced its trade.
Josef was forced to sell the company, then faced arrest and deportation to Buchenwald concentration camp. He died there during the Nazi persecution. The Stolperstein records his name, family, business, arrest, and deportation. The recorded spot is wheelchair accessible, beside this Frankfurt history memorial. This pavement stone connects one person’s name with the wider remembrance of Holocaust victims.
