The Hammering Man is a kinetic steel sculpture in Frankfurt, installed at the Messeturm building. Jonathan Borofsky created its seventy-foot figure for Frankfurt. Its painted steel surface presents a worker whose motorised arm moves a hammer backwards and forwards. Wheelchair users can access this artwork in Frankfurt.
Jerry Speyer commissioned the sculpture in 1990 for the Messeturm, designed by architect Helmut Jahn. Frankfurt’s version is the largest in Borofsky’s series. The repeated movement connects labour and creativity, linking the mind, hand and heart through one visible action. That moving hammer remains the clearest detail here.
