Gitta Landau

The Gitta Landau Stolperstein is a brass-plated memorial set into a pavement in Frankfurt. It commemorates Gitta Frimmet Landau.

Gitta was born as Gusta Wrublewsky in Radomsk, Poland, to Fanny and Siegmund Wrublewsky. She had five siblings.

After her husband died before the Second World War, Gitta raised two daughters and a son. Her family scattered across Europe and beyond.

Her daughter Lena, also known as Lissy, escaped to Venezuela through Great Britain in 1939. Her son Wolf emigrated to Shanghai.

Gitta’s daughter Toni was born in Frankfurt and attended a Jewish elementary school until 1936 or 1937. Persecution ended her plans for an apprenticeship.

Toni worked in a Jewish boarding house, where she learned cooking while preparing for exile. Gitta and Toni lived at Vilbeler Straße 27.

In 1942, both women were deported to the Lublin region, where they perished. The pavement memorial records Gitta’s name in Frankfurt.

The Stolperstein belongs to a wider memorial project for people persecuted under Nazi rule. Its brass surface connects a local address with Holocaust history.

Gitta Landau’s family story includes escape, emigration, exile and loss across several countries. The stone gives that history a place in the city.

Each detail, from Radomsk to Vilbeler Straße, links Gitta’s biography with the streets of Frankfurt. The memorial preserves her name beside the pavement.
