Frankfurter Engel
Frankfurter Engel stands at the junction of Schäfergasse and Alte Gasse in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. This wheelchair-accessible memorial takes the form of a bronze angel. Its clipped wings and slightly turned head make suffering and resilience visible.
Rosemarie Trockel designed the sculpture for remembrance of homosexual people persecuted under Nazi rule and Paragraph 175. The memorial became Germany’s first of its kind in 1994. A German inscription recalls murdered victims, silenced deaths and persecuted survivors, while recognising continuing persecution of people who love their own sex. The bronze figure reproduces an angel originally made for Cologne Cathedral.
