Elisabethenschule
The Elisabethenschule stands in Frankfurt’s Nordend district as a gymnasium and protected historical monument. Its name honours Catharina Elisabeth Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s mother.
Founded in 1876, the institution began as a higher girls’ school, developing from the girls’ department of Musterschule. Frankfurt’s Musterschule dates from the year 1803. The present Jugendstil building on Vogtstraße was erected between 1907 and 1909, after the school left Frankfurt’s city centre. Architect Rudolf Reinicke designed the school building.
Neo-Renaissance and Jugendstil elements shape the building, which belongs to a larger complex with Fürstenbergschule. The wider complex also includes Frankfurt’s Fürstenbergschule. During World War II, the school building became a hospital before later serving the US military. Normal school operations resumed there in 1954. Boys joined the school in 1972, marking its transition to coeducation. Later renovations added facilities for science and sports education. Its protected status reflects the site’s architectural and educational significance within Frankfurt.
