Deutschordenskirche
Deutschordenskirche stands in Frankfurt am Main’s Sachsenhausen district as a Roman Catholic church within a Teutonic Order complex. The neighbouring Deutschordenshaus adds a second historic building to the site.
The Teutonic Order began construction in the early fourteenth century and dedicated the church to the Virgin Mary in 1309. Baroque renovation reshaped the interior in the eighteenth century, while a Gothic renovation followed in the nineteenth. Swedish forces occupied the complex during the Thirty Years’ War, and bombing in the Second World War caused severe damage before reconstruction and rededication in the 1960s.
German and Croatian congregations worship here, alongside Tridentine Masses. The adjacent building houses Frankfurt’s Museum of Icons, part of Museumsufer along the River Main, while a 1967 Johannes Klais organ adds a distinctive musical presence.
