Baluard de Santa Llúcia

Baluard de Santa Llúcia rises above Sa Penya within the fortified old town of Eivissa, known as Dalt Vila. Its asymmetrical form makes it the largest of the complex’s seven Renaissance bastions. Original cannons still stand above thick walls, facing the harbour, the gulf of Ibiza and colourful rooftops below.

Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino designed this defence during the sixteenth century, amid threats from Turkish fleets and pirates. Giovanni Battista Calvi directed much of the surrounding fortifications. The walls enclose Eivissa’s highest ground, connecting bastions, tunnels and ancient streets through routes that continue towards Sant Joan and Sant Pere. A former powder magazine now serves as an exhibition hall, while concerts and cultural events sometimes fill the open space.

The bastion played a key role against attacks from the sea, with angled surfaces creating strategic artillery positions. Beneath it, Sa Penya preserves narrow streets and houses from its former fishing quarter. Together with the surrounding walls, this military landscape forms part of Eivissa’s UNESCO World Heritage site.
