Heilig Hartbeeld
Heilig Hartbeeld rises above Eindhoven on the tower of the Paterskerk, also called the Augustijnenkerk. Jesus stands with open arms, overlooking the city from a 66-metre tower with a hexagonal base.
Jean Geelen of Roermond created the single-figure statue, which measures about four metres and weighs roughly 800 kilograms. The neo-Gothic church, completed in 1898, has three naves arranged in a cross-shaped plan, while the surrounding Domusdela complex includes a former monastery, school, chapel and gardens. A castle occupied this ground between 1100 and 1250, and Augustinian canons later established the monastery Ons Lieven Vrouwe op die Haghe here. The complex endured damage during the iconoclasm of 1566 and the Eighty Years’ War, then housed a hospital and textile factory before the Augustinians returned in 1891.
Locals sometimes call the figure Jezus Waaghals, a fitting nickname for Jesus standing high above the church roof.
