Walzstahlhaus
Walzstahlhaus stands in Düsseldorf as a neoclassical office building with a red sandstone façade. Heinrich Rosskotten and Karl Wach designed the building, constructed between 1938 and 1940. Its monumental portal rises across two storeys and forms the architectural focus of the street façade.
Steelworkers’ sculptures flank the entrance, while five console heads by Erich Kuhn mark the southern axis. The identities of these character heads remain unknown. A steel skeleton supports six floors and two basement levels, allowing flexible office layouts. The German Rolled Steel Association and its sales centre occupied the building from 1940, after its planned role as a headquarters for rolled-steel companies.
The building later housed the British occupation authority and offices of the Handelsblatt publishing group. Since 2011, AOK Rheinland/Hamburg has used around 10,000 square metres of office space. A pedestrian glass bridge connected the façade to the building opposite from 1998 until its removal in 2018. The restoration then returned the red sandstone exterior to its original appearance.
