St. Maria unter dem Kreuz
St. Maria unter dem Kreuz stands in Düsseldorf’s Unterrath district as a Roman Catholic parish church. Its Neo-Gothic exterior, built from 1869 to 1873, reflects architect August Rincklake’s design.
Paul Sültenfuß expanded the church between 1930 and 1931, before restoration work renewed its structure during the early 1970s. The former independent parish joined the Heilige Familie parish community in 2011 because of a shortage of priests. Senior breakfasts and other gatherings also bring older residents together through volunteer-led community work.
Inside, a 1974 organ by Cologne builder Willi Peter provides the musical focus during services. Twenty-four registers span two manuals and a pedal, with electric action controlling both playing and registration. Its couplings include II/I, I/P and II/P, giving the instrument several combinations for worship.
