Sankt Marien koptisch-orthodoxe Kirche

The Sankt Marien Koptisch-Orthodoxe Kirche in Düsseldorf occupies a former Second World War air-raid bunker. Its original design made the structure resemble a church for camouflage. After the war, Pastor Carl Klinkhammer guided its conversion into a worship space with windows and altered floors. The building became a consecrated church in 1949. It later hosted art exhibitions and concerts before entering Coptic Orthodox use in 2015. The church serves Düsseldorf’s Coptic Orthodox community. Inside, a new iconostasis and a marble baptismal font express Coptic traditions through worship and design. Coptic services use the marble font for full-body baptisms. The protected monument also functions as a memorial and venue for art. Beside the church, the Friedrich-Conzen-Haus provides a community and integration centre for people from varied backgrounds. That centre offers education and support, especially for refugees. Together, the church and adjoining centre connect religious practice, architectural history and community life in Düsseldorf.
