Hentrichhaus
Hentrichhaus stands in Düsseldorf as part of Künstlerverein Malkasten, forming its society house with the neighbouring Jacobihaus. A glass-and-steel, tent-like structure links the two buildings. The garden recalls the Jacobi Circle, an eighteenth-century gathering attended by Diderot, Goethe, and the Humboldt brothers. Artists and intellectuals shaped this setting.
The artist association acquired Jacobihaus and its garden in 1861, protecting the historic property from development. An art lottery helped secure the threatened grounds. Louis Ammy Blanc designed the society house, while Julius Knobel carried out the construction. The complex served artistic and social gatherings for about eighty years. A bombing raid destroyed the buildings during the Second World War. Helmut Hentrich and Hans Heuser then led the reconstruction, completed with a modern entrance and new architectural forms. The hall, bar, and restaurant support cultural events and exhibitions, while the vaulted Künstlerkeller lies below. Sculptures often stand in front of the building.
