Vogelsches Gartenhaus

Vogelsches Gartenhaus stands on Dresden’s Neustädter Elbufer as a garden house formed from two originally separate sections. The older western part dates from before 1806 and once served as an economic building for the property at Große Meißner Gasse 6. Its eastern section, designed by Christian Friedrich Schuricht between 1811 and 1814, housed the art historian Christian Leberecht Vogel.

Solid sandstone shapes the eastern building, whose attic has a shallow triangular front and long, three-part “ox-eye” windows. The reddish exterior made the house easy to recognize from a distance, while its connection with the Vogel family gave the summer residence a place in Dresden’s cultural history. Paul Wolf redesigned it in 1936, and reconstruction between 1984 and 1985 brought it into the Hotel Bellevue’s garden and administration.

Near the Canaletto-Blick viewpoint, the garden house places you beside a celebrated view of Dresden associated with Bernardo Bellotto. Its most memorable detail remains the attic: three-part windows set above reddish sandstone beside the Elbe.
