Kridttårnet
Kridttårnet rises in Copenhagen’s Carlsberg district, where former brewery buildings stand among apartments and offices. The limestone tower dates from the year 1883. Architect P. C. Bønecke designed it as part of the old Carlsberg brewery’s main entrance.
J. C. Jacobsen founded the brewery, whose electric lighting made this entrance a beacon for the surrounding area. That history explains its nickname, the Carlsberg Lighthouse. The listed building now houses Von Bartha’s contemporary art gallery after restoration adapted it for cultural use. Original flooring remains, and new materials improve the acoustics.
Inside, a spiral staircase leads towards the glass lantern, while Terry Haggerty’s site-specific artwork marks the exterior. An inscription records J. C. Jacobsen’s motto, while the nearby side building carries words from his will. The name means chalk tower, despite the limestone walls.
