Tower of Shadows
Tower of Shadows stands in Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex, India, between the Parliament Building and the Palace of Justice. The pavilion, designed by Le Corbusier, was built in 1957.
The structure studies solar movement and controls sunlight inside a building in a hot country. Its north side remains completely open, exposing the interior to daylight. Three other sides carry brise soleil, with vertical cross walls and horizontal wing walls. Angled elements at varying depths block or admit sunlight as the sun moves across the sky. Cross walls shade low sunlight, while wing walls block direct rays.
Aligned precisely on the north-south axis, the pavilion interrupts the central square’s symmetry. Concrete construction places solar control within Chandigarh’s modernist architectural landscape, developed as Punjab’s new capital after partition. The open north side and layered screens offer a clear physical lesson in light, shadow, and temperature.
