Chiesa di San Costanzo

Chiesa di San Costanzo stands on Capri as one of the island’s oldest religious buildings, surrounded by terraces, vines, and pergolas. Its simple façade overlooks a rural setting that recalls the farmhouses clinging to Capri’s rocky slopes.

The church rises above Roman remains, with Byzantine forms shaping a Greek-cross plan and a central dome. A Gothic chancel, a fourteenth-century portal, and an Angevin crest show how later periods altered the building. Roman flooring and brickwork remain visible inside, uncovered during restoration work in 1990. San Costanzo became Capri’s cathedral in 987, retaining that role until the sixteenth century.

Patchwork columns preserve the clearest sign of repeated repairs and adaptations. A small bell tower with Arabic-style details stands outside beside the layered masonry.
