Virgin Mary Church
Virgin Mary Church stands beside the Nile in Maadi, Cairo, as a peaceful Coptic sanctuary with white walls and three domes. Arched windows and carved wooden screens bring Coptic and Byzantine elements together.
Built around the tenth century, the church is believed to mark where the Holy Family began travelling by boat towards Upper Egypt. Inside, old icons and saints’ relics preserve centuries of Coptic faith, while warm light settles across the stone and wood. A Bible found floating on the Nile in 1976, opened to a verse blessing Egypt, remains part of the church’s spiritual story.
The river stays close beside this quiet place, linking ancient stones, silent prayers and Cairo’s wider sacred landscape.
