Nikolaiviertel
Nikolaiviertel sits on Berlin’s eastern Spree bank, forming historic Alt-Berlin with neighbouring Cölln since around 1200. Narrow streets lead past German restaurants, museums, and reconstructed façades.
At its centre stands Nikolaikirche, Berlin’s oldest church, originally a late Romanesque basilica built around 1230. Twin towers added in 1877 complete its silhouette. World War II destroyed much of the quarter, and reconstruction during the 1980s paired historic replicas with East German Plattenbau. That contrast gives the streets their distinctive architectural rhythm.
Ephraim-Palais presents a Rococo façade and serves as a museum after reconstruction. Knoblauchhaus preserves a building from 1760 and houses a Biedermeier museum. Nearby, Wappenbrunnen adds a medieval-style fountain commemorating Berlin’s founding among the quarter’s historic and modern surroundings.
