Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft

The Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft stands within Humboldt University in Berlin, beside its historic Main Building. The building, designed by Wilhelm Cremer and Richard Wolffenstein, gives the institute an architectural setting near the university’s historic centre. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral study, with Germany’s distinctive doctoral programme in library and information science. Membership of the international iSchools network connects its work with information as an academic discipline.

Its roots reach the early twentieth century, although the school closed during the Nazi era. After German reunification, library programmes from the Free University and Humboldt University joined together. An early twenty-first-century transformation added digital skills, research methods, and an international iSchool direction. Projects include Digitised Manuscripts to Europeana and re3data.org, while the Berlin Library Science Colloquium brings international speakers to Berlin.
