Kisha Katolike Shën Luçia

Kisha Katolike Shën Luçia stands in Durrës as a Catholic church and co-cathedral within the Catholic Archdiocese of Tirana-Durrës. It carries the name of Saint Lucia of Syracuse.

The church is recognised as Durrës’s oldest Christian church and remains closely tied to the city’s religious history. Its neoclassical façade, exposed stonework and thick supporting walls combine formal design with local materials. Old stones form the walls.

The church has shaped religious, cultural and political life in Durrës, including Albanian-language teaching and meetings linked to independence. Its past also includes use as a puppet theatre and warehouse during the communist period. The building later returned to religious use.

Inside, tombs honour Albanian Catholic figures including Imzot Pjetër Gjura, Nikoll Kaçorri, Vincens Prennushi and Jul Bonati. A Marian icon adds another devotional focus. The church also connects with Mother Teresa, Saint Lucia’s feast and the layered history of Durrës.
