Cascada del Parc de la Ciutadella
Cascada del Parc de la Ciutadella rises at the northern corner of Barcelona’s Parc de la Ciutadella. Its triumphal arch, two pavilions, stairways and two-level pond create a monumental fountain complex. Behind the sculptures, an artificial grotto and former aquarium extend the architecture into the hillside.
José Fontseré designed the park and fountain after the former military citadel gave way to public gardens. Antoni Gaudí contributed the hydraulic system and designed the grotto beneath the water feature. Construction ran from 1875 to 1888, and the monument formed a focal point during Barcelona’s Universal Exposition.
Rossend Nobas’s iron La Cuadriga de la Aurora crowns the structure above the Birth of Venus. Four griffins by Rafael Atché release water from their mouths at the monument’s base. The surrounding park adds trees, plants, birds and steps where spontaneous merengue gatherings still take place.
