Casa Vicens
Casa Vicens stands in Barcelona’s Gràcia district as Antoni Gaudí’s first major architectural project. Built between 1883 and 1885, the summer residence combines straight lines with ceramic tiles, Moorish arches, and exposed brick columns. Its orientalising design draws on Indian, Persian, Japanese, Mudéjar, and Nasrid traditions. Yellow Indian carnations found on the site appear again in the patterned ceramics.
Manuel Vicens commissioned the house in 1878, when Gràcia remained an independent town beside Barcelona. Gaudí completed the design in 1880, shaping rooms for family life, including a dining room, kitchen, bedrooms, library, and roof terrace. The original property also held a large garden, while a neighbouring convent bordered one side of the house. In 1925, Joan Baptista Serra added an extension that followed Gaudí’s style and made the building freestanding.
A palmetto inspired the cast-iron entrance gate, giving the approach a detail rooted in the former garden. The house became a World Heritage Site in 2005 and remains wheelchair accessible.
