Barcelona, mural G-333
Barcelona, mural G-333 stands in Barcelona’s Raval district, directly opposite the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, MACBA. Eduardo Chillida created this mural in Barcelona in 1998.
The work belongs to MACBA’s public art collection and was designed for a concrete dividing wall beside the museum. It connects the museum with its surrounding neighbourhood.
Chillida made this piece his first large ceramic mural, using refractory concrete plaques and copper oxide paint. The finished surface has a black, textured appearance.
Produced with Hans Spinner in Grasse, the mural reflects Chillida’s interest in materials, abstraction, and the relation between forms and empty space. Strong dark graphic lines define the abstract composition.
Measuring 591 by 1,555 centimetres, Barcelona, mural G-333 occupies the wall with a scale suited to its urban setting. Its design brings abstract art into Barcelona’s public space.
