Jakobertor

Jakobertor stands in Augsburg as a medieval city gate marking the eastern boundary of Jakobervorstadt. The gate belongs to Augsburg’s historic architecture.

Its square lower section contains pointed arches and Roman stone tablets set into the western wall. A weathered relief lies inside the passage.

A pine-cone relief above the passage represents a symbol associated with Augsburg. The structure rises into a watch house with a square footprint.

Its upper section forms an octagonal tower beneath a tent-shaped Gothic fortification roof. A square foregate extends from the eastern side.

Wooden rollers remain visible inside the foregate’s passage, recalling the former drawbridge system. A Saint Christopher image occupies a shallow niche above the entrance.

The complex appears as exposed medieval brick because its original plaster has disappeared. Its history reaches back to the predecessor called Lechhauser Tor.

The gate later served as a guard post, a fire-watch tower and a military prison. A fixed bridge replaced the former drawbridge during the nineteenth century.

Bomb damage destroyed the interior and roof during the Second World War, while the outer walls remained standing. A post-war roof and concrete stairs made the building usable again.

Renovated floors now accommodate organisations, including a youth support association. The Bavarian-Swabian Way of St James passes through Jakobertor towards Augsburg’s city centre.
