Sint-Theresia
Sint-Theresia stands in Luithagen, within Antwerp’s Berchem district, as a brick parish church from the interwar period. F. de Montigny and L. Somers designed the building with a broad central nave, five bays, and an attached southwest tower.
A Carmelite monastery built alongside it completes the architectural complex. Inside, plastered walls rise beneath a barrel vault with parabolic transverse arches, while a stone portal marks the entrance. Albert Servaes’s painting of Saint Theresia connects the church with an earlier chapel, and Jos Hendrickx’s stained-glass windows from 1968 add colour to the interior.
The helmet-shaped tower roof and matching dome give the exterior its clearest outline. The church and monastery also retain the memory of a temporary chapel that served the neighbourhood before construction began in 1938.
