Herberg Zeeburg
Herberg Zeeburg stands in Amsterdam-Oost beside the water, near Fort Zeeburg and the historic Mosselsteiger landing place. Built in 1675, the former inn predates Amsterdam’s expansion into this part of Diemen. Ships unloaded livestock and fish there, while stables, barns, and a haystack supported the trade.
Its surviving exterior largely dates from 1766. In 1887, livestock trading moved to the new Veemarkt, and the surrounding activity changed. After 1915, the building served as an office for the municipal quarantine station, then for Zeeburg Emergency Hospital. That complex included a villa and about ten barracks. After Slotervaart Hospital opened in 1975, the barracks disappeared, while the former inn survived as a national monument.
The building is the oldest in the Indische Buurt. Inside, renovated apartments retain doors, stairs, and beams alongside the largely original exterior. Its walls have sheltered Jewish children, refugees, and tuberculosis patients during different chapters of Amsterdam’s history.
