Vier-Jahreszeiten
Vier-Jahreszeiten stood in Wiesbaden as a hotel and bathhouse designed by Christian Zais in the early nineteenth century. At Sonnenberger Tor, the planned building combined bathing facilities with a Roman courtyard, arcades and a columned portal. Financial constraints reduced the projected cost from 250,000 to about 100,000 gulden.
Construction began in August 1818, financed through mortgages and loans rather than the original grand scheme. The completed building opened in 1821, although Zais did not live to see it finished. Its large columned hall led to 150 rooms, 44 baths and a courtyard designed for carriages.
Royal and notable visitors included the singers Angelica Catalani and Henriette Sontag. An air raid destroyed the hotel in 1945. Fourty-four baths once stood behind that columned hall, making the vanished complex a vivid part of Wiesbaden’s bathing history.
