Gedenkstätte Alte Synagoge
The Gedenkstätte Alte Synagoge in Wiesbaden commemorates Jewish victims from the city who were murdered under National Socialism. It stands on the site of Wiesbaden’s former synagogue.
Reinforced-concrete walls mark the building’s former dimensions and give the memorial a clear architectural outline. The synagogue outline also appears in the ground surface.
Stone plaques carry the names of identified Jewish victims from Wiesbaden, bringing individual lives into the place’s design. The memorial is also known as the Michelsberg Memorial.
Its name-based remembrance connects the visible remains of the site with people targeted during the Holocaust. The original synagogue was set on fire during the Pogromnacht and later demolished.
The site preserves the location of a destroyed Jewish place of worship through walls, outlines, and names. The memorial’s creation followed local efforts to restore public remembrance at this authentic Wiesbaden location.
The Wiesbaden City Archives has responsibility for the memorial.
