Hundertwasserhaus Wien

Hundertwasserhaus Wien is a residential building in Vienna, created through collaboration between artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and architect Joseph Krawina. Its colourful façade combines mosaics, playful balconies, irregular windows, and undulating lines instead of a regular grid. Earth and grass cover the building’s roof above the colourful façade. Trees and bushes grow across terraces and around the structure, bringing visible greenery into the urban setting. The building’s floors follow an uneven, gently wavy surface. Hundertwasserhaus Wien contains homes, offices, private terraces, communal terraces, studios, workshops, and rooms for events. The project links everyday residential life with artistic work and a deliberate presence of nature throughout the structure. Straight lines do not define the house here. Different window and balcony shapes give the façade a varied, lively appearance across Vienna. The project became Hundertwasser’s first architectural undertaking and established a model for later buildings joining colour, organic forms, and planted surfaces. Kunst Haus Wien stands nearby. The museum presents Hundertwasser’s life and work, while Hundertwasser Village stands across the street. Vienna contains this unusual architectural landmark. The building brings art, architecture, and nature together within an unmistakable urban setting.
