Arca di Guglielmo da Castelbarco
Arca di Guglielmo da Castelbarco stands beside Sant’Anastasia in Verona, marking one of the area’s earliest Gothic funerary monuments. Four slender columns support its Gothic canopy.
Trilobed arches frame the sarcophagus, while a pyramid-shaped roof crowns the structure above. Construction began during Guglielmo’s lifetime, when he chose the position above the Dominican monastery entrance. His father Azzone was buried in the same monastery. Sculpted figures decorate the sarcophagus front, with Guglielmo’s recumbent image resting above.
The monument’s visible position expressed Castelbarco prestige and influenced later funerary works, including Verona’s Scaliger tombs. Guglielmo, a Trentino nobleman, supported churches in Verona, Rovereto and Trento as a patron of the arts. Hand-carved details show why this Gothic structure stood apart from Verona’s older Romanesque buildings.
