Villa Algarotti-Berchet

Villa Algarotti-Berchet stands in Carpenedo, on Mestre’s northern edge within the municipality of Venice. Its low, horizontal form resembles a rural farmhouse more than a traditional Venetian villa. Exposed brick details mark the garden façade, while the building presents a separate face on each side.

The villa grew from a seventeenth-century casino purchased by the Algarotti family and rebuilt as a residence. Its later rooms sheltered exiles, generals, artists, and military authorities during turbulent chapters of Venetian history. The Berchet family made the property home to patriot and historian Guglielmo Berchet, while the American Red Cross later used it as a hospital. Today, the Daughters of Saint Joseph maintain a school there, continuing the building’s long connection with public life.

A large hall preserves classical busts, vases, and frescoes attributed to Giovanni Battista Crosato. Former stables resemble a small temple, with bas-reliefs attributed to Antonio Bonazza. The park contains a circular pavilion between two Bonazza statues, although the pavilion now serves as a private residence. The chapel faces the Terraglio road, giving the complex another distinct architectural viewpoint.
