Palazzi Contarini degli Scrigni e Corfù
The Palazzi Contarini degli Scrigni e Corfù form a connected pair of palaces beside the Grand Canal in Venice’s Dorsoduro district. Both buildings were commissioned for the Contarini family, an old Venetian noble house. Seen together, their matching three-storey height frames a sharp contrast between Gothic verticality and Renaissance symmetry.
Palazzo Contarini Corfù dates from the fifteenth century and presents pointed arches, four-part windows, and a water-facing portal. Later renovations left traces of eighteenth-century frescoes inside and at the rear. Palazzo Contarini degli Scrigni followed between 1609 and 1616, usually attributed to Vincenzo Scamozzi, with Istrian limestone and rusticated stonework. Five round-arched windows align across each main floor. Tommaso Scalfarotto later strengthened the facade with an arch. Their floors meet at the same levels, allowing movement between the contrasting palaces through the interior.
Ownership changed after the Contarinis left in 1838, and Riccardo Rocca later hosted political, artistic, and scientific guests. A stone plaque preserves the memory of French actress Réjane as a guest. The small rooftop tower also received Charles, Prince of Wales, and Princess Diana during a visit.
