Campo San Polo

Campo San Polo occupies a broad square in Venice’s San Polo district, second in size only to Piazza San Marco. Trees shade the paving, while the Church of San Polo and historic palazzi frame the space.

Before paving transformed it, animals grazed here and crops grew across the ground. A well appeared at the centre when the square was paved in the fifteenth century. Public gatherings then brought bullfights, sermons and masked balls into Venetian daily life. The market for poorer residents later moved here from Piazza San Marco, strengthening its role in neighbourhood life.

Carnival costumes, open-air concerts and film screenings still connect the square with Venice’s cultural calendar. Nearby Rialto adds lively markets, bacari, artisan shops and the commercial history of goldsmiths and banks. Palazzo Corner Mocenigo once sheltered the mercenary Gattamelata and later had separate doors for the living and the dead. Even the facing pharmacy carries a memorable name, alla colonna e mezza, meaning “the column and a half.”
