Il-Knisja ta' Santu Wistin
Il-Knisja ta’ Santu Wistin stands at the street’s edge in Malta, with a stone façade beneath a dome. The church serves as a quiet architectural landmark shaped by centuries of worship and community life.
Augustinians received the site in 1571, and Girolamo Cassar designed its first church for the growing city. New foundations rose in 1765, creating the Baroque building that holds a statue of Saint Augustine by craftsmen from Cottonera. A chapel contains Mattia Preti’s painting of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, while works by Ġanni Vella depict moments from the saint’s life. The restored organ adds another layer of craftsmanship to the interior.
Since 1968, the church has served as a parish, while Saint Rita’s statue leads a procession through the streets each May. Soft light from the dome settles over the altars, linking the building’s artwork with its continuing traditions.
