Il-Knisja ta' Santa Luċija
Il-Knisja ta' Santa Luċija stands at street level in Malta, with pale limestone catching the light above broad entrance steps. Doric pilasters divide the façade into three bays. A classically framed portal, modest window, and discreet bell tower complete the exterior, crowned by Saint Lucy’s statue.
Built soon after the city’s foundation in the 1570s, the church first honoured Saint Francis of Paola. Dominican friars used the space for sacraments before wine merchants supported its rededication to Saint Lucy of Syracuse. Her familiar symbol, eyes displayed on a plate, remains part of Maltese religious tradition.
Inside, the compact space opens into baroque colour, gilded carvings, detailed stonework, and decorated altars. A painting of Saint Lucy overlooks the high altar. Nearby, a relic of Saint Lucian and a gilded gallery with musical angels and putti connect devotion with artistry. Modern devotional works show how the church continues to evolve, while December brings people, light, and song to its feast.
