Il-Katidral Anglikan ta' San Pawl rises above Malta with a distinctive, almost pyramidal spire that catches the eye first. Its pointed tower stands apart from the rounded domes and nearby church architecture. From the surrounding rooftops, the sharp silhouette gives this Anglican cathedral a clear presence in the landscape.
Adelaide, widow of King William the Fourth, inspired the building during the early nineteenth century. Architect William Scamp gave it classical lines, and Anglican worship began here after consecration in 1844. Inside, Catholic influences meet an understated Anglican character beneath the same roof. The result brings two religious traditions together through familiar forms and restrained detail.
A restored seventeenth-century organ came from Chester Cathedral in England. Tradition holds that George Handel once played this instrument. The bell tower remains a striking feature, with its narrow point extending above the city’s rooftops.
