Parkpergola

The Parkpergola forms a long, open architectural border beside the Binnenhof in Máximapark, Utrecht. Each honeycomb element stands six metres high. Each concrete element measures eighty centimetres deep. Connected elements create a transparent passage nearly one kilometre long, allowing visitors to walk beneath the structure. Adriaan Geuze and West 8 designed the pergola. Its repeated concrete forms create a continuous row along the park’s central section. Hop, ivy, wisteria, honeysuckle, and kiwi plants grow across its framework. Images of animals decorate several honeycomb ends. The pergola supports birds, bats, and insects through built-in habitats, including shelters, nesting boxes, and insect hotels. The design is intended to last about one hundred years. Its open structure reveals seasonal changes as plants grow across the concrete framework. The Binnenhof includes bridges, a lily pond, and a Japanese garden. Máximapark also contains the Lint path and Vlinderhof flower garden. The Lint circles the park for nearly ten kilometres. Together, concrete, vegetation, and wildlife habitats give Parkpergola a distinct role within Utrecht’s urban landscape. It joins concrete architecture with local urban ecology.
