Jan van den Doem (Jan van Henegouwen)
Jan van den Doem (Jan van Henegouwen) stands in Utrecht’s cloister garden beside the Dom Church. Created by Paul Grégoire in 1970, the shell-limestone sculpture shows a standing man looking upwards on a rectangular pedestal.
A plumb line hangs from his left hand, linking the figure to architecture and the Dom Tower. Jan van den Doem was one of its three master builders, beginning work in 1321 and completing it in 1382. During the Dom Church restoration, the sculpture entered storage before returning to the garden on 22 March 1989.
A bird with a woman’s head rests on his right shoulder, while a beaver crouches at his feet. Together, these details connect technical skill, inspiration and building in nature.
