Unterer Donauturm (Werk XXV)
The Unterer Donauturm (Werk XXV) stands in Ulm, Germany, beside the Danube as part of the city’s historic fortifications. Its thick walls and elevated position reflect nineteenth-century military architecture. Built between 1845 and 1855, the defensive tower formed part of the Bundesfestung Ulm. Engineer Major von Völker designed the tower for this strategic river position.
The fortification helped control Danube traffic and connected with the Untere Donaubastion and Untere Stadtkehle. A wall once linked these structures. That wall has since disappeared, while the tower remains largely in its original form and now hosts youth and cultural activities through Jugend und Kulturplattform Donauturm e.V. During conflict, a massive iron chain could stretch across the Danube to block advancing ships.
