Obere Donaubastion (Werk I)

Obere Donaubastion (Werk I) forms part of the Bundesfestung Ulm, a nineteenth-century military complex. The bastion stands within Ulm's historic fortress landscape. Major von Schele directed its construction during the nineteenth century, following the Montalembert polygonal system. Thick natural-stone walls contain deep gun slits. The four-storey reduit combines defensive barracks, living quarters, and gun casemates within the fortified structure. A stair tower and two flank towers complete the arrangement. Connections to other works linked this bastion with the broader defensive network of the Bundesfestung Ulm. Its sloping glacis remains largely intact beside Ulm's Ehinger Anlagen. The reduit houses the Danube Swabian Central Museum, several associations, and a Turkish theatre, while surrounding spaces support cultural recreation. Nearby facilities include a skate hall and a club. The bastion's military history also includes service as an air-raid shelter and emergency housing. Its architecture records changing methods of fortress defence.
