Donauschwäbisches Zentralmuseum

The Donauschwäbisches Zentralmuseum stands in Ulm inside the Reduit of the Upper Danube Bastion, a former barracks within the nineteenth-century Ulm Fortress. Its galleries trace Danube Swabian history from the late seventeenth century through the present, across the multiethnic regions of the Pannonian Plain.

“Danube Swabians: Departure and Encounter” follows village life, farming, migration, displacement during the Second World War, socialism, and new beginnings in Western countries. “Danube: River Stories” adds twenty-two perspectives on a river flowing through ten countries, bringing together fishermen, travellers, refugees, conservationists, animals, and river deities. More than 50,000 objects preserve rural everyday culture, photographs, comparative material, and works connected with Hungarian-German artist Josef de Ponte. The accessible building has occupied its ground and first floors since renovations added staircases and a lift.
