Chiesa di San Giuseppe

In Italy, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe presents a late-seventeenth-century church rebuilt for the Camillian community. Carlo Emanuele Lanfranchi receives attribution for the project. Inside, a pale marble high altar fills the chancel with carved lines, polished surfaces, and a dense sculptural arrangement. Giovanni Battista Trucchi di Levaldigi financed the marble altar.

Lanfranchi arranged the composition after Amedeo di Castellamonte’s strict models, allowing only a few carefully recorded variations. An inscription in the pediment records completion in 1696. Trucchi commissioned Sebastiano Taricco’s painting, the Transit of Saint Joseph, plus statues of Saint John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene. The painting hangs above the altar, and the two figures frame the choir. His funding secured burial rights within the building. The neighbouring convent later changed its uses and layouts. The bombing of 8 December 1942 left scars on the building. A bronze bust of the patron is preserved in the civic museum.
