Chiesa di San Francesco di Sales
Chiesa di San Francesco di Sales stands in the Valdocco courtyard in Italy, with a measured profile and broad Latin-cross plan. Its sober furnishings leave space for many boys from Don Bosco’s oratory.
The building replaced the cramped Cappella Pinardi and was consecrated on 20 June 1852. The main altarpiece shows the Resurrection, bringing joy and grace into the spacious interior. Saint Luigi’s chapel preserves its original altar, tabernacle and plaster statue, acquired by Don Bosco during the early years. In 1959, a new floor and paintings added scenes from Don Bosco’s life, Michele Rua’s story and Domenico Savio’s example.
Domenico Savio prayed here and made his offering to Mary, while Michele Rua celebrated his first Mass. Beside the building, Don Bosco’s former rooms form a museum with objects, books and portraits. A modest memorial plaque recalls the years when these walls stood at the centre of work for poor and abandoned youth.
